The iMarker: not just a the stylus for kids?

Benjamin Rabe

Griffins iMarker and Crayola ColorStudio aims at kids, but the technology is certainly interesting for artists at well.

iMarker safely interacts with iPad’s Multi-Touch display, allowing the ColorStudio HD app to differentiate between the child’s input (fingers, swipes, etc.) and the iMarker automatically.

Another look at Styli

Susan Murtaugh
We’re all pretty good when it comes to using our fingers to get around on our digital devices but some of us prefer the comfort of a capacitive stylus for drawing and painting. I am one of those. Like many I started out with the pogo by Ten One Design and I was happy to have it securely clamped to my iPod touch when I traveled. The little sponge tip is pretty reliable though it is the slowest, because of the sponge drag on the screen. Some find they need to apply pressure to the tip as well in order to get it to connect with the screen. I’ve not had that problem. They come in 2 styles the shortest of the bunch, clips to the side of your iPhone or the slightly longer pocket clip version. They both retail for $14.95.

The next most popular versions are the BoxwaveGriffin, and Targus.

Mobile Art Con 2011 announced!!

Mia Robinson

Yes, it is official! Mobile Art Con 2011 is a go!  We have confirmed the dates and location for iAMDA’s 2nd Annual International Conference…err..UN-Conference, and now we want to share it with YOU!

Mobile Art Con 2011 (new name pending) will set up shop at NYU ITP for a 2nd year.  The conference dates are confirmed for October 1-2, 2011 with art making activities, events and ‘happenings’ running the full week prior (9/25-9/30).

We anticipate a bigger and even more exciting event than last year!   If you weren’t able to make it to last year’s gathering, this is your opportunity to see what everyone’s been talking about!  And if you made last year’s–well, let’s just say, it was only the beginning! :-)

So STAY TUNED, everyone! Info on events, travel and how to submit workshop proposals will be released over the next few weeks.

Wanna volunteer? Become a MobileArtCon 2011 Sponsor? Or perhaps you have some ideas about activities or things you’d like to see at the next MobileArtCon. Email us and let us know!

*Note:  The above image was fingerpainted by JoseAndres Guijarro Ponce at  Times Square during MobileArtCon 2010.  To view more images and video from last year’s conference, visit www.MobileArtCon.com or check out iAMDAOrg’s YouTube channel.

Adobe Ideas. A good idea.

Matthew Watkins

Adobe Ideas is a snappy mobile sketching app. It is a well designed with a simple and clean user interface but not loaded with features like many apps we use.  Ideas is vector based, giving it almost unlimited canvas and no limits on output size. This is not a small thing considering that many great mobile apps output only at screen resolution. And of course it seamless integrates with Illustrator, Photoshop and other Adobe products.

You can download the app for free, but you will have to purchase “layers” as an in app add on (€3.99 $4.99). I tested the 1.2 in beta, just before it was released on Valentines day.

The new release will permit you to switch the navigation from left to right. It gives you VGA output from your iphone or ipad, though I haven’t had an opportunity to try this yet, but it makes for a great way to present an idea (pun intended). It has also considerably boosted performance, zoom is very fast.

iAMDA UK Turns Guilford into the epicenter of mobile art

Matthew Watkins

Guilford, Surrey was the epicenter of experimental art last weekend when Guildford College and other local venues hosted a groundbreaking roadshow bringing mobile digital artists from around the world to work together.
The three day event (February 11-13), sponsored by Adobe Sytsems and organised by college lecturer Paul Kercal in collaboration with the International Association of Mobile Digital Artists (IAMDA), began at Guildford College on Friday with a “next generation” life drawing class for art, graphics, photography and IT students in which tradition met technology. Drawing on iPad using fingers or Pogo styluses, students used art apps to create pictures of models from the respected Brighton Life Drawing Sessions team.
